With Janurary already underway, it is important to know what to do to keep your home safe from the elements. Below are some tips to help you avoid a roof collapse this winter due to snow and ice, ice dams, and damaged gutters.
Know your roof load
Hire a structural engineer to tell you maximum roof load from ice and snow so you know when it is time to remove ice and/or snow from your roof.
On average two feet of old, packed snow and and additional two feet of new snow could be beyond the capacity for most roofs.
Prevent roof damage and interior water damage by preventing ice dams
Remove or relocate heat sources that are installed in open areas directly under the roof and/or increase insulation in the attic.

Additional Recommended Preparations:
• Increase insulation above ceilings.
• Clean out gutters. Debris can trap ice and snow which can cause them to detach and/or cause ice damming.
• Double check gutter hangers, fasteners, seams, etc. to make sure they are secure.
